What it is
The Paper Horse Head is a wall-mounted horse head papercraft you print, cut, fold, and glue from 21 sheets of card. The design set out to capture the thing that is hardest to build from flat paper — the dynamism of a horse’s muzzle and the character it gives the whole animal. Finished, the 3D horse head stands 52 cm (20.5 in) tall with a full 44 cm (17.3 in) of depth, so it reads as sculpture from across the room.
It took at least six prototypes to get there. The most challenging aspect was condensing such a complex shape into a paper pattern comprising just 21 sheets — each facet has its purpose. It doesn’t need to be folded in traditional horse colours either; bay, chestnut and black all work well, but pink and silver suit it just as well. One thing that matters more here than in most of our designs is paper weight — at 260 gsm and above, the facets hold their edges and the form shows what it can do.

Where it belongs
Made for: home decor · nursery / kids’ room · school craft project · photo prop / event styling · horse lover gifts · horse accessories display
On a living-room or hallway wall it does the work of a mounted sculpture without the weight or the cost of one. In a nursery or a kids’ room it puts a horse on the wall in paper rather than plastic. As a school craft project for older students it is an ambitious horse paper craft — 21 sheets teach planning and patience in a way five sheets never do. Stylists and photographers build it as a photo prop; one maker built hers near life-size to display and photograph her products on. And for the horse lover who already owns everything from the tack shop, it is a gift no shop sells finished — or a stand-in head for displaying the bridles, halters, and hats they do own.
How you build it
- Print or cut. Print the PDF (A4 or US Letter) at home on card, or send the SVG to a Cricut or Silhouette — cut and crease lines are separated, ready to go.
- Score and fold along the marked lines.
- Glue the numbered pieces in sequence. The numbering means you’re never guessing what connects to what. The eyes are the fiddliest step — the instructions include the option to leave them out.
- Mount it on the wall and step back. The 44 cm of depth is what makes it read as sculpture rather than a picture.
How hard is it?
Level 3: A proper project. More pieces and finer folds, rewarding a little patience.

What makers say
“I needed a horse head as close to life size as I could get, to display and take pictures of my products. This was perfect. Instructions were easy to follow and it was easy to assemble. Once done, I spray-painted it black.” — Jacquie, via Etsy
“For such a complicated form the template is really easy to use to create a brilliant object. The horse’s eyes were very fiddly but there is an option to omit this step if needs be, which is great. Definitely recommend.” — Bronwyn, via Etsy
“Lovely template and result, easy to follow instructions. Take your time making it.” — Signe, via Etsy
